I need a good pop-upblocker for Internet Explorer 6.0, it has to be able to block ALL popups, it may not contain any spyware junkware or adware, and it must be free.

Please do not recommend another browser such as Opera or FireFox cause i love Internet Explorer.

wow, you really love IE huh? well, to be honest, i don't care much which browser wins in the ''wars'', coz in my profession, it's important to know what works with one browser and what doesn't work with another.

I'd suggest, you install the Yahoo! toolbar. Allows you to extend the capabilities of IE (including the tabbed window -- a useful feature which I like about mozilla), and has a decent pop-up blocker and anti-spyware capability.

Boot your computer into safe mood (press F8 as your computer is booting up and from a list, choose Safe Mode). If you are able to get to the main desktop of Windows, open Norton and do a scan of your whole system. I recommend doing the same with the Spyware removal program as well. Once you are done scanning is safe mode, reboot the computer and try scanning all over again after your computer has booted up normally.

I believe you have a bad driver trying to load. Either that or a bad startup program. You should boot your machine and press F8 and select SAFE MODE. Once Windows starts in SAFE MODE go to

START | RUN | msconfig

Go to the STARTUP tab and uncheck everything. Reboot.

This time, do not go into SAFE MODE. If it boots into windows, you have a bad program trying to start. Run each program that was in the startup until one fails. Then you can fix that program by reinstalling it.

If not, you have a bad driver. In this case you should boot into SAFE MODE again and remove one piece of hardware at a time in Device Manager and reboot until you find the bad one.
What's causing it to do that is a Systems Crash at startup...so you're stuck in the endless cycle of bootup, crash, reboot, crash and so on...

Hi, I am looking to startup a new business that designs and builds custom PC's, and I am fond of the term ''ware'' as it's a common word in the PC industry, ie. softWARE, hardWARE, adWARE, spyWARE, etc.

My question is, if I name my business something like ''LightningWare'' or ''PowerWare'' (those are just made up examples) am I likely to run into any legal issues, since another major custom PC manufacturer out there is named ''AlienWare'' ?

Since ''Ware'' is such a common term in the PC industry, I'm hoping it wouldn't be an issue. What do you think?

The problem is i have one pc that has the worst ping time and also times out ..Its not the cable modem hooked striaght up to a differnet pc i get 10 ms - 20ms with no request timed out.. with the 2nd i get 750 ms - 1250ms and a lot of time outs. same modem and same cat 5... on the second pc i ran updated virus scan ..adware ...bypassed nic card.. with usb... still same results... diabled all firewalls , norton virus , reset the pc back to earlier date... cleaned cookies reset the network settings i am at a lost any other ideas? If that is anything more than 1ms, then you need a new NIC.

If it comes back fine, then check your NIC driver, make sure Windows IE7 is not installed, try safe mode WITH networking (will eliminate most software issues it could be) or just break out the hammer and beat the crap outta it until it works right.

Sounds like a bad network card. Try reinstalling the network card driver (updated) first. If not, try a different network card.
maybe your motherboard doesnt support speeds that fast. If it is an older mobo than this is probably the case. good luck.
So is this PC connected directly as well or wirelessly? It could be a problem with the order QoS(quality of service) setting in the modem that sets the one PC to have a much better control over the bandwidth. Try disconnecting that good PC and then just run them with the other PC.

This is an old machine short on memory to be running XP. Not to be rude - but your laptop is worth $150 tops.
As a used computer reseller, I would sell a laptop with those specs easily for $100 to $200. I wouldn't expect to get much more than that given it only has one USB port and 192mb ram and no CD-R.

At 1st my comp completely crashed. I was able to run ad-aware to keep it from crashing but it hasn't completely fixed the current problem. I have tried downloading Trend AV, but when I run the program, it says the download was corrupt and cant complete the scan. Try doing all the scans and removals while you are in Safe Mode. Hit F8 when you start your computer and select Safe Mode - Let it boot and then run all the scans that you can. Delete Everything the scans find, reboot into safe mode again and do it all over again. You will need some other software too - Try Spybot Search and Destroy - www.safer-networking.org. It finds things that Ad-Aware doesn't, and vice-versa for that matter, so use them both. If all else fails you will have to Format and Re-Install, good news is that if you can get into safe mode then you can back your stuff up. Hope this helps...

Aurora and Norton Antivirus?

I suspiciously got the Aurora virus at the exact same time I installed Norton Antivirus. Now Norton isn't picking it up so I can remove it. I know there are other programs and ways of removing Aurora, but why should I pay $50 for another spyware program? Why isn't Norton picking up on it? Ok first of all Norton can't install a virus other ways Norton would have some law suits to attend to. Then everyone who had Norton could sue symantec for the money they need. So there is your proof that Norton isn't the virus maker also the reason isn't picking it up is because you need to update your virus definitons. I never cared for Norton's, too many things get through it. For my personal computer I use Avast (www.avast.com). It's free for personal use and I've never had a problem with it. Avast finds corrupted emails I get daily from my website which Norton's never found and I haven't had any problems with spyware or virus' since switching to Avast.

I use it. It is simple and easy. I have WinXP SP2 and it works fine. Go for it. Be sure and install the GPL Ghostscript before you install the cutePDF.

I am computer literate, but somehow instead of deleting, I installed. Then it was called Echos(archpr). I now have adware and my computer is slower. This was a month ago. I have Yahoo Toolbar and (since 1 week ago) avg internet security. I did a search of everythng created on that day and there was an exe file that started with a v; which I deleted but to no avail. I would prefer to remove manually, but dont know what to look for. I am wary of downloading one program to remove another one.

If you download a program and install it, the only way you can remove it is to UNinstall it. What you did was delete the execute file, so now whatever you downloaded cannot be uninstalled. It HAS to have the execute file to do that. In order to get rid of this whatever-it-is, you will have to reinstall it in order to uninstall it. You can delete the folders, but you will not remove the program itself. It HAS to be uninstalled to be removed. Apparently it is causing you a problem, so you want it removed.

There is one possible solution if you have Windows XP. You can do a system restore, that is, restore the settings of the computer system to a date before you installed the program you don't want. That's if System Restore will let you go back over a month ago. If you do that, you will also remove anything else you downloaded and installed since then, including Yahoo Toolbar and AVG Internet Security. This will not damage or do anything to any files you have, it just affects downloaded programs. If this is an option for you, then click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and System Restore. Pick a date a day or so before you downloaded the Echos or whatever it is and let the system restore to that date.

When you want to really make sure your computer is free from spyware and viruses, you have to do the scanning with Windows booted into Safe Mode (No Networking).

Otherwise, programs could be going back out to the Internet and just re-infecting your computer. Also, some stuff cannot be deleted unless you do the scans in Safe Mode. Tapping F8 key when Windows is about to boot will get you a menu.....

You also may just be getting pop-ups that tell you you have problems. NEVER click on Close or OK or other buttons in these pop-up windows unless you are sure they are coming from Anti-virus or anti spyware programs you have installed, some will try to trick you, then download stuff to your computer without you knowing.

Always close these types of Windows by clicking on the 'X' in the upper right corner of the window or right clicking on it in the taskbar and choosing Close.
Here's what I suggest:

Click on the link below and scroll down the page to free online virus %26 spyware scans.

Select Panda (ActiveScan) from the list.

When you get to their site, click on the Scan My Computer button.

Eventually you'll be taken to a page where you choose the areas to scan: select My Computer.

Panda will clean %26 disinfect anything it finds...and that's usually everything.

my computer was runing fine, for a while. i had no problems with it at all. i just recently got it back from my family and i noticed that when ever i try to play music or video's. it gets laggy and cuts off and werid noises come out of the speakers. and the video stops? i was wondering what could this be? at first i thought it was spyware adware etc. but i removed everything from my computer by re-formating it. i thought that would fix the problem but that was not so. but how ever i did notice when i would uninstall the graphics card. and use the mother board grpahics the computer would work just fine playing music and i could watch movies. but when i re-install it the graphics card it goes back to laging. could i please get help asap.

Sounds like you've answered your own question by process of elimination. Either your card is not set up correctly or has a corrupted driver or it is shot. For the last, get a new card. For the first, open the Device Manager (Windows button + Pause/Break, Hardware tab, Dev. Mgr. is quicker than the Control Panel) and select Display Adapter. Right click on your adapter and select Properties. The window should show the card's current state in the Device Status area on the General tab. Use the trouble shooter if needed. Also check the Resources tab to see if there are any device conflicts. Before doing the above, do a complete uninstall of all software associated with your graphics card driver and do a clean install to check for a corrupted driver.

Unless your built0in graphics is interfering with it, I'd look at the graphics card. Are you SURE you are disabling the on-board graphics?

Next step- get a new graphics card. An el-cheapo will do for now. Plug it in, see if it works.

no, you couldnt have erased anything, unless you were just deleting random drivers out of your system32 folder, which i bet you weren't.

try pressing the left button on an empty area. does it work like the right button all of a sudden? if it does, press the left alt button on your keyboard a bunch of times. i know it sounds stupid, but it worked for me. i couldnt begin to explain why because holding alt and left clicking does not act like a right click.

safe mode is a different shell in windows. when you dont shut down properly or reset the computer without using the windows start menu, windows thinks something absolutely must be wrong with your computer and suggests you search for the problem in safe mode, which does not load all of the drivers and linked libraries that the standard windows shell does. safe mode does not require going back to system restore. you just restart the computer to get out of safe mode.

Have you tried Ccleaner? Run the ISsues tool, then the Cleaner. Thn click Tools - Startup and stop stuff like your office suite loading on Startup.

Click start, settings, control panel, look for power options, click on that icon, you should have a tab that comes up that says power schemes, under where it says ''settings for presentation power schemes,'' make sure the ''turn off monitor'' setting says ''never''. Also make sure turn off hard disks says never, and system says never.

Don't use Internet Explorer. It's got bugs like this. TONS of bugs like this.

Use Mozilla Firefox, instead. It's faster, more secure, more reliable, customizable, and it's open-source, meaning that anybody can alter it however they please. Firefox also gets updates all the time, instead of every few years like Explorer. This means that the very MINUTE a critcal bug is found, you'll probably get an update.

hi, that maybe a virus, perhaps you can try Norton to remove the virus. but you need to pay for the software.

i also recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.

besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.

when i am using yahoo messenger (version 8) after approx 1 hour of chatting and or playing games within the yahoo messenger window, i am suddenly unable to see what other people are typing and vice versa. on some occassions i am disconnected totally. I have reloaded messsnger V8, reloaded earlier verisons, used all 4 connection preferences in the messenger setup window, scanned for spyware, adware, underwear, u-name-it-wear, ...all to no avail. I have even upgraded my broadband isp service so bandwidth is not the problem either. can anyone offer some assistance please? thanks in advance.

I think this new yahoo messenger is the most worthless piece of software I've ever used. Sometimes it works fine, other times I cannot even log onto the chat rooms. Nothing happens, or sometimes if it feels like it, it'll say chat took longer than expected. I don't even use messenger anymore. Good luck getting it fixed, but look into getting ICQ or something because 8 has been out for quite a while and the problems aren't going away.

Windows XP start time is getting longer and longer - why?

Over the last 2 weeks Windows XP has taken progressively longer and longer to start - it now takes several minutes to actually get going. It shows the ''loading'' page with the bar for a short time and then flicks to what will be the desktop but shows only the background and then takes ages to put all the icons up. I haven't loaded any new software that would account for this and One Care Live detects no spyware or adware. I'd appreciate any help.

(ANS) This sounds like a dirty windows registry database, windows XP does take quite a long time to load up at the best of times. Why? if you understand the loading up process its actually pretty complex, windows has to use NTLDR to detect your machines hardware, then it has to load each device driver associated with each peice of hardware, after this it loads from the registry database, the individual users profile which iis also held within the registry. The user profile defines things like, desktop wallpaper, desktop icons, which applications you have on the programs menu, screen colours %26 screen preferences,etc. all of this has to be loaded from the settings within the registry. If software is load and then unisnstalled it can leave redundant seetings %26 values within the registry and these can cause problems at a later time or might just slow things down.

OK.....I have WindowsME (I know...it rots but I have had it 7 yrs with no troubles so gimme a break! lol) Anyway....today when I open Internet Explorer....I noticed my web pages look and act strange. Sentence blink in and out of bold, my cursors dont match what Im typing, there are 6's beside the buttons on my top toolbars and my fonts keep switching back and forth from bold to normal. Why does Yahoo Messenger quit, close, and then cause me to have to reboot my modem and pc?

For several weeks now I have been encountering a serious problem when entering chat through Yahoo Messenger. I can log in fine, enter the chat room fine, and send perhaps two lines of text fine, but after less than two minutes Messenger throws me out of the room, shuts down, the chat window closes off my screen, and I no longer have any connectivity to the internet. At this point I am forced to shut down my pc and my cable modem, unplug and replug all the modem cables (after waiting at least 5 minutes), and then boot the system back up. This sequence happens without fail every time I go into chat. I have run every virus scan, adware scan, and spyware scan I own but nothing has helped. My OS is windows xp pro, and I sure would appreciate any help anyone cares to share. Thank you for your assistance.

Sounds like you have a virus or you need to upgrade your microsoft windows (i.e. service pack 2 etc...).

A) Uninstall Yahoo! Messenger. Reboot and Reinstall.

B) Reinstall Windows.

If both fail. Contact Customer services.
It sounds like you might have had a virus, Trojan or something that caused damage to your Registry. You should find someone who knows about how to fix Registry problems, because it can be dangerous to try to fool with it if you don't know what you're doing. Back up all your files first.

You definitely seem to have some kind of infection. Unfortunately, the really nasty badware poses a problem for the vast majority of scanners out there today. Spysweeper is actually one of the better options for protecting a home computer

If your problem is on a business machine though, there is a an even better option available. I have had no problems or slow-downs with the built-in firewall in SP2 in Windows XP Pro. It is very easy to turn off the firewall if you wanted to. SP2 also monitors whether there is a problem with your anti-virus protection. I have at least a dozen PCs at work that have Windows XP Pro SP2 and performance is very important since they run critical applications 24/7.

I would not hesitate to update to SP2.

I run Adware, SpyBot, and Norton but to no avail. After all three are finished scanning my files and registry, each one reports nothing found. Ditch Internet Explorer and get a Macintosh. Safari is a much safer browser, anyway. I have had a Mac for about a year and have not yet had a problem with adware and spyware.

as john said the temp stands for temprary but it is used to temp download like when click on music download but instead of downloading it to your hard drive u click play instead so it will be downloaded to this folder and after that it will be deleted. another example when you click on program download on the internet but instead of you click save, you click open so it must be loaded to the hard before it could be opened or installed and the temp folder is the place where it is saved before installing or running. it is never used for saving website at all as there is another folder with the name temprary internet files which is used for this purpose.
When you do certain things, like visit an on line site, the computer will set up a temporary folder to hold the info until you are done. I periodically empty mine as the info is useless once you are finished.
TEMP stands for TEMPorary. Now that you've deleted it, simply create it again and all will be fine.

Go to start,run,msconfig. Click on Startup. Check off the box you don't need and restart you pc instantly. It should disable anything you don't need.

I have recently made the switch to Mac, and I love it! I have had absolutly no trouble with my MacBook so far, but; I feel almost 'naked' without any type of virus or anti-spyware software on my computer.

I know that Macs are not targeted as PCs are, but that also does not mean that they are 100% safe either.

What you DO need to do is use basic computer security.

not all programs are .iso capable. to prevent the copying of some programs anti-copy software checks for minor inperfections in the writing of the disk, which will be skipped if copied, or if not physically present will show that it is not the original disk - see how Microsoft does Copy protection on their games for an example of 1 of about a dozen .iso defeat protections.
Because of the money and hard disk space saving, a .iso's are heavy. Besides if you have a good firewall, a good antispyware and a good antivirus you don't need to worry about downloading cracks from every website you want. Do you have something else to say?

Uninstall one of the programs as two anti virus programs working together cause big conflicts to computer.

You should never have more than one antivirus program installed on the same computer, they interfere with each other and make it so that lots of viruses go undetected.

Download the install file for AVG-free (http://free.grisoft.com), then unplug from the internet, unistall both norton and trend micro, then install AVG, then plug back in and update AVG and run a full scan.

Could be. I've been using it for a few years and haven't had any major problems although I do have to scrutinize my downloads with anti-spyware and cleaners - and I have had to clean up quite a few of them.

I'd recommend downloading Firefox. IE has too many problems with regards to security. It's not worth the hassle to fix IE, when you can d/l Firefox which allows you to import bookmarks and settings from IE.

Yes it is possible to do this.I would guess you have managed to get a virus on your PC.The only way to get rid is to change your internal hard drive as the virus will be on your existing hard drive and can not be removed as it will be in the hkey registary.

Computer Virus- Live CD?

I have a computer that has a virus/adware/spyware on it. The computer has Windows XP on it. The virus has basically infected the windows registry, so, because I am not an advanced user, I don't know how to remove the virus in Windows.

First of all, Windows Defender is a SPYWARE program NOT a virus program! It also has other security features but it is not a virus application.

Secondly, how are you sure you are so horribly invaded? How do you know it is in the Regristry? Linux is a differant OS than Windows, so I doubt very much any product which runs on that program will work on a Windows OS.

Now, how do you know you are so infected? I had an infection one month after purchasing my last computer which completely crashed and burned it. There was no booting up, period.

If you are able to do a regular boot up, then I am wondering if you are infected. What makes you so sure this is the situation? Did you run one of those so called Regristry checks or scans and it came back telling you that you have all these errors and viruses and you have to purchase their key to fix them? That is such a hoax. Don't fall for it. You obviously can get booted up, AND get online, so I am really doubtfull of your having a virus. You probably got some spyware or adware. Run a virus scan, or download AdAware and run that. I get very few pop us anymore. Plus, your internet provider probably has a pop-up blocker that you can use.
